To expand the opportunities for adventure that we offer, the school recently purchased eight mountain bikes from the Arusha Bicycle Centre. These have proved a massive success, with groups going on rides offsite on both days at the weekends, always under the guidance of a qualified trail cycle leader and a local guide.
Before Easter, we set out early in the morning to beat the heat, and completed a two-hour ride around the Kisongo hills, returning hot and dusty. Now that the rainy season is upon us, we often find ourselves fighting through thick mud, or crossing raging torrents. Adventure is out there!
Boarding students are now permitted to bring their own bicycles to school, and the weekends see them riding endless loops round our expansive grounds, improving their skills and fitness. They are also learning how to repair punctures themselves, which unfortunately happen quite often thanks to our acacia trees. It is our intention to make mountain biking a core part of what we offer here, and build towards a multi-day trip as part of next year’s activity week.
